COMP80900 Year 1 CDT Research syllabus 2018-2019
Before starting on the research phase of the first year which constitutes this unit, CDT students will have selected a research area and been assigned a supervisor or supervisors.
This unit requires CDT students to clearly define a research topic and address this topic from their own perspective. They should then aim to acquire a strong background in their chosen research area by studying the literature, engaging in regular discussions with supervisors and colleagues, undertaking learning assignments, and generally familiarising themselves with the practices of research. They should gain experience in communicating their ideas in written form, formal presentations and informal discussion. Ultimately, the aim is to produce a Year 1 Report consisting of a substantial literature survey, impact survey and a clear summary the research aims, objectives and anticipated methodology. A formal presentation of this report must also be prepared and given to an assessment panel. An 'executive summary' of the report must be submitted in advance of the presentation.
The unit requires the gaining of research experience under the guidance of a supervisor or supervisors. The focus will be the Year 1 Report and the associated formal presentation. The supervisor(s) and other CDT staff will ensure that the demands of these two requirements are clearly understood, and that appropriate and achievable interim objectives are defined and attempted. The degree of interim success will be fed back, mainly by the supervisor at the regular meetings, and progress will be recorded and monitored by e-Prog. Any remedial action needed will be suggested by the supervisor(s) and help with the report writing and presentation style will be given prior to the submission deadlines.
The Year 1 Report as specified above will be read by the supervisor(s) and an independent second reader to produce two or more written assessments, feed-back and an agreed mark. It will be circa 30 pages (double spaced) and worth 50% of the the final mark.
The formal presentation, supported by the 'executive summary' of the Year 1 report', will be assessed by a panel of two independent examiners in the presence of the supervisor(s) and the advisor. Detailed questions will be asked to clear up any possible misunderstandings, test understanding and authenticity and establish a fair impression of the presentation. Feedback will be generated. The presentation will take 30 minutes and will be worth 50% of the final mark.
The final assessment, with a pass-mark of 50%, is derived from the two components detailed above.
1. Regular meetings with supervisor(s), attendance at research group seminars and group discussions.
2. Supervisors suggest suitable research papers and other references, and provide help in the process of understanding these and assessing their significance.
3. Supervisor(s) set achievable interim tasks, provide help and give feedback on the work produced.
4. Supervisor(s) provide help and advice in the planning, writing and presentation of the Year 1 report and the presentation based on it.
