COMP20920: Practical and Transferable Skills (2007-2008)
This course unit combines practical work in the form of laboratory exercises from other course units, and additionally provides study and transferable skills including raising awareness of the recruitment process, careers, team working, and practice in writing essays and giving presentations.
A student completing this course unit should:

Assessment of Learning outcomes75% of this course unit is formed from laboratory exercises associated with the other course units taken in the second year.
5% by monitored attendance at the workshop.
10% for technical essay (during reading week).

An introductory workshop
Focusing on the following areas: What employers look for when recruiting graduates/computer scientists; Strategies for finding a placement - role of WorkPlace; The job market and how to play it - creative jobsearch and networking; Making the best use of fairs, employer presentations and events; Planning and objective setting Preparing an application, the 4 Rs of marketing; Putting together an effective CV and covering letter; Application forms: standard, employer and online. Why employers use them, what they look for and how to do well at them; Interviews essential preparation, tackling difficult questions, making a positive impression; Different selection methods: psychometric tests, group exercises, presentations, technical tests, case studies; A session designed to help students in preparing for assessment centres and also for teamworking as part of their industrial placement and/or group projects as part of coursework: Theory of teamwork - Belbin; Practical team problem-solving. A session designed to help students to learn how to prepare, structure and deliver a formal presentation. NB this session will be timed to link into the assessed presentation that students are required to do in their second year. Students will be able to relate what they have learnt to the preparation and delivery of an effective presentation, when required, as part of their course/job selection process; Students will participate in a practical exercise/case-study.
A group presentation
Done in tutorial groups, based on material from COMP20341.
Fortnightly, covering material from the associated Computer Science course units.
A technical essay
Done during reading week, being a precise and update on computer-science related magazine articles.
