Pathways for PhDs and early career researchers: Friday 7th June
Registration for Pathways 2019 is now open. The event will take place on Friday 7 June
This event for UoM PhDs and early career research staff gives them the chance to hear from dozens of former PhDs - how they made their career decisions, what they’re doing now and what they learned along the way. It’s also a great opportunity to meet and network with over 400 PhDs and research staff in one place.
Register and find out more at manchester.ac.uk/pathways. If you supervise research staff, please encourage them to attend. If you are a PhD student or RA, sign up now as places are limited.
Tech Nation Report - UK Tech on the Global Stage: Weds 29th May, 6pm - 8.30pm
This summer Tech Nation are on the road to mark the launch of their Tech Nation Report 2019. Join founders, entrepreneurs, investors and tech ecosystem partners, as they explore how the UK’s digital tech ecosystem stacks up against global competition. Panellists include:

Congratulations Venture Further nominees and winners
Venture Further is an annual business startup competitions for all current students, researchers and recent alumni across The University of Manchester. The competition is sponsored by IBM, BNY Mellon, Manchester Science Partnerships and Waters and awards a £75,000 prize fund.
This year Ignas Bolsakovas was nominated in the environmental category; Ignas graduated from the school of Computer Science at the University of Manchester in 2017. With his collaborator Karolis Petruskevicius (PhD student in power networks) he was nominated in the environmental category, see this short explanatory video youtu.be/W1GrmFAV1fQ. Salford Smart City – Salford’s ambition for a Connected City: 17th June with Jon Corner
Salford’s MediaCityUK has the UK’s first operational 5G network. Join City of Salford Chief Digital Officer Jon Corner and key commercial partners in conversation about:
- What benefits can 5G bring for public services?
- How will 5G help unlock the Internet of things?
- What new models of governance and partnership will be required?

Forging a new data science partnership with BBC R&D: 29th May, Kilburn building
George Wright, Head of Internet Research and Future Services for BBC Research & Development / UoM Simon Industrial Fellow will be talking about forging a new Data Science Research Partnership.
The talk will focus on the work of the BBC R&D department and specifically the research carried out by George and his team in developing digital services for the BBC. He will discuss the rationale and goals of the Data Science Research Partnership (DSRP) between the University and the BBC and highlight the project he is conducting with the Cathie Marsh Institute for Social Research (CMI) as part of that partnership.
Digital Futures are seeking to recruit participants from across the University for interviews during June and July that have an interest in using BBC data. If you are keen to talk with us then please come along to the event and register your interest. Accelerate ME demo day: June 13th in Manchester
Accelerate ME Demo Day (accelerateme.co) is back for a fifth year and is shaking up the Manchester start-up scene yet again. We identified the most ambitious student and graduate founders across University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Salford and Royal Northern College of Music. Fourteen startups were selected to go on an intensive 6-month programme where they got access to office space at Manchester Science Partnerships, up to £2,000 of grant funding and mentoring.
Demo Day marks the end of this year's programme. The 14 startups get a chance to showcase their companies and their achievements over the passed few months in a series of short pitches followed by an exhibition-style networking event designed for the audience to connect and get to learn more about the teams. Our annual industry club meeting will take place The rough draft agenda (tbc) is currenly as follows,
- Year in review with Duncan Hull (30 minutes)
- Undergraduate curriculum changes with Steve Pettifer / Sean Bechhofer (30 minutes)
- HackSoc + CSSoc = UniCS with newly elected co-chairs Raluca Lazarescu and Sara Caballero Bruno (10 minutes)
- Institute of Coding instituteofcoding.org introduction and workshops with Suzanne Embury and Caroline Jay (rest of the day)
- Any other business
Details and registration to follow, we expect between 100 and 150 of our industrial partners to turn up, mostly from London and Manchester. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know.
