    PGR Well Bee-ing Project

Oh noes! ANOTHER SURVEY!!! Fortunately, I won't be pestering about this one :) However, the research looks to be really interesting. The data about PGR well being is sparse but what exists is largely worrisome.

If you have a spare 20 minutes, I strongly encourage you to participate. We won't know who does or doesn't participate so there's no pressure. But it would help advance our understanding. I would also be interested in your observations about the survey design.

I had a nice chat with the RA running the survey and they were very helpful about existing literature. They seem like good folks. —Bijan.

    PGR Well Bee-ing Project:

What is the prevalence and nature of wellbeing amongst postgraduate researchers?

The PGR Well Bee-ing Project is a university-wide project funded by the Office for Students. The aim of the project is to better understand wellbeing and mental health issues from a PGR perspective, and improve and tailor our provision, support, and resources for our PGR community.

The purpose of this study is to identify the prevalence and nature of wellbeing amongst PGRs at The University of Manchester, and to gain a better understanding of the challenges to the mental health and wellbeing of our postgraduate researchers.

Participants are required to complete an online questionnaire relating to their wellbeing and mental health. This will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

To take part in the study you must be:

    • A current postgraduate research student at the University of Manchester (including those with submission pending).

For more information please contact: rebecca.crook@manchester.ac.uk, or to complete the survey please follow this link: https://apps.mhs.manchester.ac.uk/surveys/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=96KHnm61H.

Full ethical approval has been granted by the University of Manchester Research Ethics Committee 5 for this study [Reference number: 2018-5203-7923].

STFC Innovation Placements - work opportunities.

    Dear all,

I am pleased to announce that there are a number of paid Innovation Placements available for University of Manchester PhD students, who are in at least their second year of study. These are generously funded by the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and are linked to the Square Kilometre Array project (SKA), led at Manchester by Prof Keith Grainge. Please note that this will be the final call for these placements as the funding is coming to an end. Posts taken up under this scheme must not start any later than 1st October 2019.

If you are interested in these placements but would need to interrupt your study for 6 months to take part please make sure that you speak with your supervisor about this before applying. You will also need to update the Physics PGR team. You do not need to be an STFC-funded student to take up a placement and international students are welcome to apply.

If you are a supervisor of any students who would be a good fit for a placement please make sure they are aware of this opportunity.

The SKA project is based in the School of Physics, however this opportunity is also open to students in several other relevant Schools across the Faculty. SKA is an international multi-purpose radio telescope that will involve many different areas of science and industry, both in the current pre-build stage and the construction phase; when built it will provide a transformational view of the Universe.

The placements are 6 months in length and successful applicants would work in the role of a Research Assistant at the offices of an industrial partner. Each individual project requires specific knowledge or experience; please see the attached descriptions for further details. These posts are a great early career development opportunity for graduates. At the end of each placement you will be expected to produce the deliverables listed against the project description and also put together a short report for STFC detailing your experience.

In your application please demonstrate how your experience and skillset align with your selected placement, and attach a current CV. Candidates will need to make their own travel arrangements to the interview (to be held at company offices, addresses are on each placement description) and to the job itself if successful.

Please list any dates when you would not be able to attend an interview following the application deadline (however note that we cannot guarantee alternative arrangements).

Attached please find the job description, 4 placement descriptions and the application document; if interested send me your application and CV by the deadline. Awards will be allocated based on applicant merit and the best fit of skills to the projects.

All applications must be received by end of day Friday July 12th; late applications will not be considered. I will send reminders in due course.

If you have any questions or would like more information please do let me know.

    Best wishes,
