    Phased Reopening of Campus

    Dear Colleagues,

I hope you are well and have been able to enjoy some time off over the long Bank Holiday weekend.

I am writing to keep up to date with the plans and activities taking place to allow us to safely reopen our on-campus research facilities and to share useful resources to help you informed.

Currently a small number of our laboratories have remained open for urgent Covid-19 research, including specific laboratories in Morton and Pariser and activities in the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB) has been supporting clinical trials related to Coronavirus, while colleagues in the Michael Barber Centre for Collaborative Mass Spectrometry have been profiling the molecular structure of SARS-Cov-2 and work in the Simon Building has been focused on aerosol emissions.

At the present time, all colleagues not involved in the above research or reopening activities must continue working from home. We understand that you want to return to campus as soon as you possibly can, so that you can continue your research, but there are essential safety checks to our buildings that need to take place -  including flushing and cleaning of water systems (to prevent Legionella), checking of fume hoods in laboratories and ensuring lifts are operational.

There are also new ways of working which need to be developed and implemented so that you can use the facilities whilst maintaining a safe social distance. As part of the phased reopening only colleagues who need to go into the research labs to work will be allowed access. All writing up, data analysis and non-laboratory work will continue to be done remotely and all meetings will need to continue to be on-line for the foreseeable future.

Those members of staff who are planning our phased return to campus are also incredibly conscious that we need to protect colleagues who may be vulnerable or live with someone who is vulnerable as well as taking into consideration other factors that are impacting our work and home lives such as caring responsibilities, home schooling and how we travel to and from campus.

We know that many of you have asked to go back onto campus to pick up equipment, books, computers and so on, but unfortunately this is not possible yet. We promise you that as soon as it is safe and acceptable to visit buildings on campus we will tell you.

In the meantime if you have any questions or concerns please speak to your supervisors.

The University has launched a new resource to keep staff up to date on the campus reopening plans. This can be accessed here: https://www.staffnet.manchester.ac.uk/campus-reopening-corporate-support/

I would encourage you to check-in with this new resource and, if possible, attend the weekly FSE Open Meetings so that you can hear from and ask questions directly to the Faculty’s senior leaders.

Beeline, the FSE weekly newsletter which is emailed to all staff every Friday, is another useful source of information on our continued response to Covid-19, campus reopening and other news.

This evolving situation, caused by the global pandemic, continues to present challenges. We can assure you that there is a tremendous amount of work currently taking place to respond to these challenges and to ensure that the campus is a safe place to work when you do return.

We would like to thank you for your continued patience in these unprecedented circumstances.
