    Alexander Flemming Prize for PGRs

Submit your 500 word summary of the doctoral thesis to EPSGRADED@manchester.ac.uk no later than 8 August 2021.  The Faculty Associate Deans for PGR will then decide which nominations to put forward.

The Alexander Fleming Prize, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is a £20,000 prize for a doctoral thesis level project which will benefit global public health (UK based researcher).

It will be judged by a panel comprising Hayaatun Sillem, CEO of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Sir Jim McDonald, Principal of Strathclyde University, Roger Highfield, Science Director of the Science Museum and Subhanu Saxena, Director of GlobalHealth at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

We are open to nominations from all UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). A judging panel will then review the submissions in August and the winner will be announced and presented by the Gates Foundation on Tuesday 9th September 2021 at the New Enlightenment, Braemar Summit.

    CRITERIA

Submissions must include a short 500 words summary of the doctoral thesis.
Submissions must be in the areas of research that look at solving existing challenges in global health, particularly health issues affecting people living in low and middle income countries.
Candidates must have successfully completed their viva for a doctorate degree within a period one year prior to the deadline, with their thesis requiring only minor corrections or no corrections.
Candidates must be nominated by a UK HEI: maximum of 3 nominations per institution.

A supporting statement (200 words) from the HEI signed by the VC/ProVC (or
    equivalents/similar) for each nomination.

Informal Session with New Law Firm Specialised on Computer Science

The Innovation Factory has signed a new partnership with https://www.vennershipley.co.uk/ (a leading European IP firm). Next week Tuesday, 3rd August, one of their partners (https://www.vennershipley.co.uk/people/pawel-piotrowicz/)  is coming up to MCR and is very keen to have a relaxed informal session with the PDRA/PhD community, over Zoom.

If there is sufficient interest, Pawel can prepare some case studies similar to the interested PDRA’s/students’ field of research and perhaps some interesting conversations may come from this interaction.

The anticipated time for the informal session is 1pm, Tuesday, 3rd August.

If you are interested in attending this session, please let Erol-Valeriu Chioasca (erol-valeriu.chioasca@uominnovationfactory.com) know
