    Preparing for your final year

This is a new PGR unit intended to give PGRs the skills to be able to effectively plan their remaining time and work, write and submit their thesis and undertake their viva. It also provides PGRs with the tools to be able to interact with a non-technical audience and consider careers following their PhD.

This unit is intended for students in or about to start their final year with the first sessions being held in the first week of November. Please contact Grahm Richardson if you think you should have been registered and you have not received an email with further details.

Online course to support researchers working with personal data

A new online course (‘Managing and sharing research data from human participants’) has been developed to support University of Manchester researchers who work with personal data. Specific attention will be paid to the requirements of data protection legislation for recruiting participants and gaining consent, managing the data securely, and anonymising data so that it might be shared for future use.

This course will be delivered using a ‘flipped learning’ approach:

    1. A collection of online resources will introduce learning materials, which will be available for all researchers to use at any time.
    2. Researchers may opt to also attend an interactive online session where they can apply their learning to real-life research project case studies. Working together in groups, attendees will explore the issues and risks, and present back their mitigation strategies for wider discussion to formulate optimum solutions. Expert facilitators from Information Governance, Ethics and Research IT will be available to offer practical guidance and support.

To access the online resources, see: http://man.ac.uk/07tVYl

To attend the online session (Monday 22 November 2021, 10:00 – 12:00), please register at: http://man.ac.uk/zi8yHv

This course has been created by a partnership across the Library, Information Governance, Ethics and Research IT, and is delivered via the My Research Essentials researcher development programme.
